Overview:

• The Cheetah Reintroduction Project in India aims to revive the cheetah population, which became extinct in India nearly 70 years ago.

Current Population:

• Total cheetah count in India: 30 (as of December 2025).
  • Includes 19 cubs born on Indian soil.
• Recent births: 12 cubs in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park (KNP), of which 3 cubs did not survive.

Mortality Rates:

• Six cheetahs (including three cubs) died in the year; mortality comprised:
  • One adult cheetah from Namibia.
  • Two sub-adult cheetahs.

Geographic Distribution:

• Cheetahs currently housed:
  • 27 at Kuno National Park, Sheopur district.
  • 3 cheetahs transferred to Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Mandsaur district.
• Plans to introduce cheetahs to Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary, Sagar district.

International Collaboration:

• Initial imports included 8 cheetahs from Namibia (September 2022) and 12 from South Africa (February 2023).
