HAL Secures $1 Billion Jet Engine Deal

• Contractual Agreement: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed a deal valued at approximately $1 billion (around ₹8,870 crore) with GE Aerospace to procure 113 F404-GE-IN20 jet engines for the Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA) program.

• Timeline of Deliveries: The delivery of these engines is set to commence in 2027 and must be completed by 2032.

• Context of the Deal: Despite a downturn in India-U.S. relations, particularly after the Trump administration imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, the agreement has been finalized.

• Previous Contracts:

  • In September 2025, the Defence Ministry finalized a ₹62,370-crore deal with HAL for the procurement of 97 Tejas Mk-1A light combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
  • In February 2021, HAL was awarded a ₹48,000-crore contract for 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets.

• Aircraft Specifications:

  • The Tejas LCA is a single-engine, multi-role fighter aircraft designed for various operational roles, including air defense, maritime reconnaissance, and strike missions.

  • The IAF has noted a reduction in its fighter squadrons, currently down to 31, against a sanctioned strength of 42, highlighting the urgency in inducting the Tejas aircraft.
