Inauguration of Wildlife Conflict Center

• Inauguration of Excellence Center: The Union Minister for Environment inaugurated the Human-Wildlife Conflict Excellence Center at the Salim Ali Center for Ornithology and Natural History in Coimbatore. This center aims to enhance scientific and evidence-based management of human-wildlife conflicts through research, innovation, policy support, and capacity building.

• National Portal Launch: A national portal for managing human-wildlife conflicts was also launched, designed to assist in data management, knowledge sharing, and decision-making to reduce conflicts across the country.

• Ministerial Insights: Bhupender Yadav emphasized the need for coexistence and ecological stability, proposing a solution-oriented approach instead of a problem-centered one. He highlighted the growing interrelationship between people and wildlife due to habitat fragmentation and changing land use patterns, which has made these conflicts a significant conservation and development challenge in India.

• Focus on Policy and Strategy: The center will focus on developing strategies for managing conflicts involving tigers, leopards, and elephants outside tiger reserves and will promote awareness campaigns in urban and rural areas.

• Call for Preventive Measures: The Minister urged forest departments to implement proactive measures to prevent conflicts and minimize damage to human settlements and crops. Coordination with local communities and multi-stakeholder consultations are essential for effective solutions.

• Technological Integration: The use of innovative techniques and best practices in wildlife conservation was stressed, aiming for extensive application to enhance the management of human-wildlife conflicts.

• Social-Economic Balance: Kirti Vardhan Singh, the Minister of State for Environment, noted the need to balance socio-economic development with wildlife conservation, highlighting the socio-economic challenges arising from human-wildlife interactions.

• Publication Release: The first edition of a publication titled "Current Status of Human-Wildlife Conflict in India: An Overview" was released, providing a comprehensive assessment of the current situation, trends, and emerging challenges related to human-wildlife conflict.

• Workshop Discussions: The national workshop included technical sessions on topics such as human-elephant conflict and technology-driven solutions for mitigating human-wildlife conflicts. These discussions aim to strengthen national strategies, promote technological innovation, and improve stakeholder coordination.

• Government Commitment: The establishment of the Excellence Center reflects the Government of India's commitment to biodiversity conservation while ensuring the safety of human life and livelihoods, utilizing science-based, technology-enabled, and community-oriented approaches.

• Key Participants: The event was attended by senior policymakers, forest managers, scientists, researchers, and conservationists, including the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Director of the Wildlife Institute of India.
