India's Export Growth in Automobiles

Article Summary

Comprehensive Summary of News Article

On August 26, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate significant developments in India’s automobile export sector, particularly focusing on electric vehicles (EVs) amidst concerns about potential trade tariffs from the United States under President Donald Trump. This announcement was made during the Economic Times World Leaders Forum in New Delhi. The key highlights include:

  • Export Growth in Automobile Sector: Prime Minister Modi emphasized the substantial growth in India's automobile exports, which have risen from ₹50,000 crore in 2014 to ₹1.2 lakh crore today. Modi noted the diversification of exports to include electric vehicles, metro coaches, rail coaches, and locomotives.

  • Global EV Exports: A significant milestone will occur with the introduction of India’s first global strategic battery electric vehicle, the e-VITARA, produced by Maruti Suzuki. This vehicle is set to be exported to 100 countries, including advanced markets such as Europe and Japan. The e-VITARA will commence commercial production at Maruti’s Hansalpur plant.

  • Battery Ecosystem Initiatives: In conjunction with the vehicle launch, Modi will inaugurate local production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant in Gujarat, a joint venture involving Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki. This initiative aims to boost domestic manufacturing and enhance clean energy innovation by ensuring over 80% of battery value is produced within India.

  • Maruti Suzuki’s Production Capacity: Maruti Suzuki, as India’s largest car manufacturer, has a production capacity of 2.6 million units yearly across four plants. The company has increased its export share, sending over 332,000 units abroad in FY25, while selling approximately 1.9 million units domestically.

  • Rail Connectivity for Exports: Modi will also launch a car-loaded freight train service from the Hansalpur plant to facilitate smoother and faster exports. Currently, three trains are operational that transport around 600 cars daily. The rail network provides vital connectivity to the Mundra port, enhancing the export logistics of Maruti Suzuki’s vehicles.

  • Production Timeline: The commencement of the commercial production of e-VITARA is set for August 26, 2023. The deployment of the railway siding at the Hansalpur plant will support the efficient transportation of electric vehicles.

  • Government Focus on Manufacturing: The government’s initiatives are aligned with broader objectives to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities and promote clean energy solutions, contributing to India’s economic growth in the face of international trade challenges.

Important Points:

  • Modi highlights India's automobile export growth from ₹50,000 crore in 2014 to ₹1.2 lakh crore currently.
