ISRO Enhances Indian Railways Communication Systems

• ISRO Initiatives: ISRO is set to triple its satellite fleet, adding three navigational and communication satellites to the current four. This expansion aims to enhance communication and signaling systems for Indian Railways.

• Real-Time Train Connectivity: ISRO's goal includes connecting all running trains in real-time, expanding connectivity from the current 10,000 trains.

• Flood Mapping: ISRO has conducted mapping of potential flood-prone areas, providing crucial data for policymakers to inform the planning of railway lines and road construction, minimizing risks associated with such vulnerabilities.

• Kavach System Development: The Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering & Telecommunications (IRISET) has significantly advanced the Kavach system, an indigenous automatic train protection initiative. Efforts include:

  • Fast-tracking the Kavach system deployment across the railway network.
  • Development of a universal braking algorithm.
  • Upgrade of Kavach labs to Version 4.0.
  • Establishment of a national knowledge management portal.

• Training Initiatives: In a record year, IRISET trained 4,364 personnel in Kavach technology across 310 courses, with a total participation of 8,462 trainees. Upgrades to training labs feature modern IT systems, focusing on technologies such as LTE/5G, cybersecurity, and AI to ensure faculty and personnel remain aligned with emerging tech.

• Technological Deployment in Railways: Railway Board officials emphasized the necessity for technology deployment to match the Indian Railways' increased capital expenditure dedicated to infrastructure development and maintenance.

• Future Aspirations of ISRO: Long-term goals highlighted by ISRO chairman V. Narayanan include:

  • Establishing an indigenous space station by 2035.
  • Aiming for a human mission to the moon aboard an Indian rocket by 2040.
