Mangrove Planting in Chennai's Coastline

Article Summary

Summary of Mangrove Restoration Efforts in Tamil Nadu

Context: The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has initiated a major project to restore mangrove ecosystems along the Buckingham Canal in Chennai, with a total planting of 20,000 mangrove seedlings across 20 hectares for the 2025–26 cycle. This is part of a broader strategy to enhance climate resilience and establish a green coastal buffer.

Key Initiatives:

  1. Tidal Flow Management:

    • A “fishbone” canal system has been created which features:
      • 8 main fishbone canals
      • 8 feeder canals
      • 186 distribution channels
    • This system supports saline water circulation necessary for mangrove growth.
  2. Collaboration with Private Sector:

    • The project has been supported by ICICI Bank under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
  3. Phased Approach:

    • Phase 1 (2024–25): Plantation of 12,500 mangrove seedlings of six species along with 2,500 associated coastal species.

      • Introduced species: Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera cylindrica, Avicennia marina, Aegiceras corniculatum, Excoecaria agallocha, Acanthus ilicifolius.
    • Phase 2: An additional 5,000 mangrove saplings of various species planted at Battle of Adyar Island on the estuary of the Adyar River.

    • Latest Phase: Involves planting of the current 20,000 seedlings, including species such as Avicennia marina, Avicennia officinalis, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, and Excoecaria agallocha.

Environmental Importance:

  • The mangrove restoration aims to:
    • Protect the shoreline and nurture biodiversity.
    • Strengthen Chennai’s resilience against cyclones and rising sea levels.

Judicial and Regulatory Approvals:

  • The Forest Department ensured compliance by securing necessary permissions from the Water Resources Department prior to commencing the plantation activities.

Conclusion: These initiatives represent a significant effort in environmental restoration and climate change adaptation for Chennai, emphasizing the critical role of mangroves in coastal protection and biodiversity support.
