PMAY-U 2.0 Meeting Approves More Homes

The recent fourth meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), held on August 12, 2025, under the chairmanship of Shri Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), resulted in the approval of an additional 1.47 lakh pucca houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0). This decision is part of the Indian Government's ongoing effort to achieve the goal of ‘Housing for All’, with the total number of houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0 now reaching 8.56 lakh. The new approvals are meant to support the urban poor by providing access to affordable and dignified housing equipped with basic amenities.

Key Highlights:

• Meeting Details: The CSMC meeting was the first convened by the Housing for All Division at the Kasturba Gandhi Marg office in New Delhi, with participation from officials including Joint Secretary & Mission Director, Principal Secretaries from various States/UTs, and PMAY-U Mission Directors.

• House Sanction Breakdown: The 1,46,582 houses approved are distributed across 14 States/UTs, including Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.

• Focus Areas: The Secretary urged better planning of housing projects in conjunction with infrastructure developments to enhance urban connectivity, economic activity, and service accessibility.

• Housing Statistics: Under PMAY-U 2.0, over 120 lakh houses have been sanctioned, with 93.81 lakh pucca houses already constructed and delivered to beneficiaries.

• Scheme Launch: PMAY-U 2.0 was revamped and launched in September 2024, aiming to extend financial assistance of up to ₹2.50 lakh to one crore additional urban families for constructing or purchasing pucca houses.

• Eligibility: The scheme caters to economically weaker sections (EWS), low-income groups (LIG), and middle-income groups (MIG) who do not own pucca housing.

• Implementation Vertical: PMAY-U 2.0 operates through four verticals—Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), Affordable Rental Housing (ARH), and Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS). The recent houses are sanctioned under the BLC and AHP verticals.

• Women Empowerment: The meeting emphasized women’s empowerment, with 75,417 houses allocated specifically to women, including single women and widows.

• Support for Underprivileged Communities:

  • Uttar Pradesh sanctioned 1,166 houses for senior citizens.
  • 12 houses were designated for transgender individuals.
  • Allocations include 32,551 houses for Scheduled Caste (SC) beneficiaries, 5,025 for Scheduled Tribe (ST) beneficiaries, and 58,375 for Other Backward Classes (OBC).

• Next Steps for States/UTs: The Joint Secretary & Mission Director advised States/UTs to expedite beneficiary verification and ensure applications received through the unified web portal of PMAY-U 2.0 are processed. States were also urged to prioritize assistance for beneficiaries from Special Focus Groups.
