AI System Prevents Elephant Deaths

The implementation of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system aimed at preventing elephant deaths on railway tracks in the Madukkarai forest range, within the Coimbatore Forest Division of Tamil Nadu, has successfully facilitated approximately 2,800 safe crossings of wild elephants since its initiation in February 2024. This initiative, overseen by the Forest Department, has proven effective in generating upwards of 6,000 alerts related to wild elephants near railway tracks. Additionally, it has accounted for over 10,000 overall alerts, which include detections of various other animals such as gaur, deer, leopards, dhole, and King cobras.

• The AI technology operates through camera-mounted towers strategically placed along the 'A' and 'B' railway lines that traverse the reserve forests of the Madukkarai range, linking Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
• District Forest Officer N. Jayaraj emphasized that there have been no reported incidents of elephant-train collisions since the system's launch.
• A dedicated team comprising 20 staff members is tasked with track patrols, ensuring swift responses to alerts generated by the AI system when elephant movements are detected. An additional four staff members oversee a control and command center.
• For nighttime operations, a total of 15 staff members conduct track patrols to enhance monitoring during hours of low visibility.
• Alerts generated by the system are communicated to nearby railway station masters and loco pilots, ensuring they are informed of elephant presences near the tracks. This advance notification allows for adjustments in train speeds to mitigate potential risks.

On August 11, 2025, Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, is scheduled to visit the AI-based system at Madukkarai, coinciding with the World Elephant Day celebrations in Coimbatore. He is expected to engage with officials from the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, likely discussing the successes and implications of this pioneering initiative.
