Tamil Nadu Launches AI in Healthcare

Expert Committee Formation: An expert committee for exploring Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare has been constituted in Tamil Nadu.

Objectives:

• Investigate the applications of AI in the health sector.
• Submit a comprehensive report on findings and recommendations.

AI Applications:

• The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) is leveraging AI for:
  • Detection of Tuberculosis (TB): Analyzing X-rays for high accuracy.
  • Early Detection of Cancer: AI models are being piloted for diseases such as lung cancer.

Pilot Projects: AI-powered models are implemented at:

• Government Royapettah Hospital.
• Government Hospital in Periyar Nagar.
• Data from CT scans and X-rays will be anonymized and analyzed to assist in disease detection.

Role of AI:

• AI significantly enhances early-stage cancer detection and helps in spotting undiagnosed cases.
• AI’s impact on the healthcare sector is anticipated to grow substantially in the coming years.

Committee Composition:

• The committee includes key health officials:
  • Health Secretary.
  • Managing Director of TNMSC.
  • Project Director of Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project.
  • Mission Director of the National Health Mission, Tamil Nadu.
  • Directors of various health services.
  • State TB Officer and 20 other experts, including a radiology professor.

Government Order: Issued for the formation of the committee to explore AI opportunities in healthcare.

Collaboration with Academic Institutions: Plans to involve experts from:

• Anna University.
• Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
• Other engineering institutions.

Vacancies and Court Rulings:

• Two years prior, 2,250 vacancies for Village Health Nurses (VHNs) were announced; recruitment faced legal challenges.
• Recent court ruling allows appointment orders for candidates from government training institutions.
• Counselling for the joining process is scheduled to commence, with the Chief Minister handing over appointment orders on September 22.
